Trial Day 1, Jury selection

Monday, May 9, 2011

The day started with Jose Baez trying to reject the whole jury pool on the grounds that the demographics of Clearwater are not in correlation with Orlando. Of course, the magnificent cool Judge Perry was not "having it" and rebuffed his motion. Gotta love Judge Perry. Judge Perry also refused the defenses' duplicate attempt to dismiss the chloroform evidence.
Judge Perry read the indictments on Casey Anthony. She was emotional from the onset today. While listieng to the indictments she began to cry uncontrollably. Cut to commercial. Really? This is the most emotiion she has show in 3 years

The jury will consist of 12 jurors and 8 alternates. The number of alternate jurors is higher than every afforded a jury in Florida. The potential jurors will be lowered by first eliminating those with "hardship" issues. Eight weeks is a long time to work for 30 dollars a day. Most were dismissed due to this cause. One Vietnamese woman was dismissed due to her hardship "I am not able to understand all the proceedings." She listed her mere 30 year residency in the US as not enough time to interact effectively in English. I will say I had no difficulty in understanding her and she had no difficulty expressing herself with appropriate grammar. She then said her husband would be out of town "on business" and she has a 14 year old at home. She was dismissed.
After ruling out potential jurors for hardship, the jurors will continue on to questioning in regard to media attention and death penalty questioning. Judge Perry hopes to have jurors selected by Friday. Selected jurors will be transported to Orlando by Tuesday and sequestered.
