Dr Michael Ricckenbach

There is alot of packages of evidence for the next witness.FBI forensic chemist. He works at the forensics lab in Quantico, Va. He has been employed by FBI for 15 years. He has been called as an expert witness  12-15 times. He has his doctorate in science. He seems to meet the qualifications that Dr Vass did not have, that Baez used to question Dr. Vass's validity of testimony. He is approved as an expert  witness. He was sent evidence to see if he could identify chloroform on items. He used the same GS/MS method as Dr Vass.
He checked a piece of the wheel tire cover.

He opened the can. Visually inspected item. Took a cutting and did the GS/MS method.  He detected an odor. He is asked if he detected an odor. Objections from Baez and sidebar.  The result of his examination was of presence chloroform on item.  Next item is piece of fabric from wheel tire cover. Chloroform was found on item. Next item,  residues of chloroform was found on item.  Next item had residue of chloroform. It was a piece of trunk liner.
"Residue" of chloroform is identified requires  two types of testing with postitive results. "Consistant" is a result from one positive testing.
Baez is questioning witness on methodology off testing. Baez wants Rickenbach to explain qualitative (just ID substance) vs. quantitative (ID and how much substance in sample) He describes the methodology as the same as Dr Vass testimony yesterday .He used the CG/MS yesterday. He is testifying the amount of chloroform w
as lower than Dr. Vass yesterday. They were not shockingly  high.Baez is asking him for results of amt of chloroform. Residue levels refers to low levels, lower than controls.  That is what was found in the samples from spare tire cover. Baez is having him testify on levels found on each item intro.duced by prosecution.
He identifies another piece of spare tire cover. The result had residues of chloroform.Rickenbach says from his experience the levels found are consistent w/ what you would see in cleaning products. Next item -significantly lower levels of chloroform residue found. Baez is really punchingn the "small amounts found" part of his testimony. Rickhenbach says from his experience the levels found are consistent w/ what you would see in cleaning products. R.

Rickenbach says he was surprised to have gotten any result at all. Normally he says he would disappear. Ashton asks how tire cover was packaged. It was in cardboard box which would allow chloroform to leakout bc it's not airtight. Rickenbach is testifying that you cannot compare sample results to Dr. Vass because he did not make suresame sample measurments  used .

This chemist has never tested for chloroform in air samples.

Rickenbach is excused. Some jurorsmare finishing up their notes
