Jason Forgey, Canine Unit, OCSO

He has a German Shepard trained dog. He testifies to his background.  He is testifying to his  ongoing educational requirements and the training of the dogs.  The dogs name was Canine Ike. He trained the the dogs and hands them off to other officers.Forgey is discussing 400-hour dog school, FDLE certification on obedience, routines, criminal apprehension, etc He worked with the  2 dogs utilized i n 9/11. The were search and rescue dogs and the OCSO trained them over to do bomb sniffing. He then obtained the two dogs and became their handler.  He is  explaining the different alerts for the dogs. He is explaining the methodology of  the search and the behavioral clues the dogs utilizes for the points of the search. Forgey says the dog is trained to detect cadavers (human decomposition) the dog would sit when alerting. Forgey's dog alerted to signs of decomp in backyard of Anthony home and the Pontiac Sunfire.
Bones' (his dog) final alert was to sit. Forgey just said he brought a pseudo scent with him. Forgey no longer has Bones. He did not pass" full service dog" the Sheriff's office wanted him to have a full service so then he got Gerris. Bones went to Osceola Co Sheriff's office because they wanted a single purpose dog. Garris was trained on placenta, chest cavity, pseudo scent for drowned victim, a leg, to train them on "human decomp"  They also trained Garris to ignore certain things. He was never given a bone (as a treat) so he wouldn't ever chew on a bone. Dog was also trained not to alert or "proofed off" of ham bones, dumpsters, pizza, cheeseburgers, decomposing animals and animal
Lunch time. Judge makes joke w jury. Tells them he hopes they enjoy it and then smiles.Judge Perry asks jury how their "outing" was for lunch. They in unison say thank you.jason Forgery is testifying to the certification of dog.  He is identifying the certification records of training for Canine Gerus, his dog.
The defense is questioning the dogs' certification. State wants to put it in evidence. Baez questions Forgery on the certification Entered into evidence with objectins noted by Baez. . Forgery describes his training log for Canine Gerus. The defense is pointing out Forgey keeps the book himself. Defense objects to it being admitted. Casey Anthony is going through a binder At the defense table. On Gerus' training log notes he has had 187 finds. On one day In 8 searches, where there were 8 targets, he got 8 finds.
Ju ry is about to see photos of Gerus' training. The training - 2 courses or schools. One was advanced.  In first picture you see Gerus about to alert near a pile of clothes. Forgey says his hair also stands up- he gave him a good hard head snap. Next photo was the "bone room" in a haunted house. Only 2 bones were real (human)-rest fake.  Gerus is a German shepherd CA  next pic is a open search. Jury seeing a final trained alert. He is laying down. And his head snaps to Forgey.
Next picture is Gerus looking over a car. Forgey points out the hair on Gerus' tail is fluffy.

Next 2 pictures are training aids- a femur and a jaw bone.Looking at picture of a brick search. Forgey points out slack in leash so handler can't lead dog.  Gerus missed the mark on this training session. He had one false alert. He located 13 items out of 15.
2005 he had 3 false alerts, They had done 31 searches that day. Forgey says Gerus was bored and tired. He says normally they only do one search.
2006, He had one false alert. In the haunted house he missed 2 napkins w/ drops of blood. LDB asking about residual odor. Forgey says Gerus has been trained to detect if a body had been moved. Training -man was dead in location for about 7 days. Took Gerus back 10 days later (after body removed) Gerus found bones police missed. Forgey says he did something similar when the body of a transient was found. A third training exercise - 10 hrs after a body had been removed Gerus was able to alert to where body was. Gerus has been onnseveral cadaver calls Real world - +200 training - almost 500 says Forgey.

Breaking down year by year --alerts, call outs, false hits, find, etc In 2008 the number of hits (searches) skyrocketed because of this case.  There were ton of cal outs for grave sites, and other tips coming in. Gerus is retired now. His last day of work was Sept 2010.  Prosecution wants to present videotape. Objection by Baez.  Sidebar. Objection overruled. Video will be 20 minutes  Recess then will show video. Baez is objecting to the qualifrication and training of
Gerus being discussed in front of jury. He equates it to the training of a narcotics dog being discussed

in front of the jury. Judge Perry  is citing law that allows it.
The video about to be played is a helicopter video of Jason Forgey and his K-9 dog Gerus in action. Forgey and his K9 were seen in a blk/white video shot from a helicopter.. Video was an infrared from helicopter. You can see dead body on video. Forgey says it was tall grass w drop off points. He says it was v dark. Forgey said his partner located a drowning victim. the K9 was pulling him toward the body.  Forgey say again when Gerus hit on decomposition- He sat (final alert) and looked at Forgery,
The video showed the body. It was from an infrared camera.  An image of the body could be seen on the video shown in the courtroom. The jurors watched via monitors in front of them.  Forgey: Went to a call where a dog dragged home a human mandible. Talking about Bones again. Says he had 4 finds. One call a dog returned w a human bone- Forgey and Bones found lower torso of a cadaver. Forgey deployed his first k9 partner, Bones.  Forgey only had Bones for 11 months. He had 4 finds. Also found man buried under garage floor. Another person found in neighborhood by pool. Forgey's K9 found the lower part of a human body. It had been ripped apart by animals. Forgey is discussing the times he and his partner were dispatched and received hits.

Bones, the dog, located a rag with blood on it from a rape case.LDB is showing evidence to Baez, walking over to the witness.. It's a report on a case. Baez objects to the evidence being submitted. Overrulled. It's admitted. Baez objects to the evidence being submitted. Sidebar is ongoing. This is a long sidebar. But it's just ended
Topic now on Forgey getting called the the Anthony home in 2008. 7/17/2008, Forgey was called to the Anthony home to search for a missing child. He first responded to the OCSO headquarters. Forgey and K9 Gerus were called to the forensic bay at OCSO. Forgey used a collar on Gerus instead of a harness.  Forgey and k9 searched he car. He has been working a cadaver dog since 2003. at that point 5 yrs experience. Forgey said the odor fron the car was "pretty strong" in the bay. CA  car, the Pontiac Sunfire, was placed in a bay at the sheriff's headquarters. Forgey left the dog in the car when first responding. Asked for the car to be removed from the bay to get away form other biohazards.

Once the car was moved out of the bay, Forgey let it it sit for a bit. Forgey had Gerus sweep another car near Casey's car before taking him to the Pontiac. During first sweep, the doors were closed. K9 swept the car in a counterclockwise manner, Forgey said.   Forgey swept a car on west side of CA"s car first as taught to do in training. Doors closed on CA car on first sweep.

K9 swept the car in a counterclockwise manner, Forgey said. First pass, Gerus started indicating at rear of vehicle. He asked tech to open driver's door. Gerus dove into the car between driver seat and back seat, looking to trunk area, trying to get back there.  Several jurors take notes as Forgey explains how Gerus hit on the trunk of the car. Detectives had a particular area that they wanted Gerus and Forgey to check out in the backyard.Gerus was brought to the backyard, most people were removed from the area .Forgey commanded Gerus to find human remains with command "Find Fred" and have a collar on. The dog was off-lead (no leash.) Since the backyard was fenced in and a "controlled" area, he let the dog search on his own.
Forgey describes the backyard, including two sheds and a swimming pool. There was an indentation in the yard. Detectives were concerned. The dog did not alert on the indentation.  The dog did alert near the playhouse in the corner of the yard, Forgey said. Forgey is looking at the jury as he gAnother K9 shows up. Forgey gives only general information in an effort to prevent a false alert.ive his testimony. State is now publishing a photo of the backyard. It shows Caylee's play house. Forgey marks the photos with a circle of where the dog alerted. It was near the front of the playhouse. CA does not appear to have any reaction to this testimony or the photos.  Bones is the name of the second dog who arrived from Osceola County. Forgey was present during search by Bones. He did not run the search with that dog. Bones and his handler worked together. Baez up for cross examination.  Jose just smiled at the jury after saying good afternoon.  Baez asks if Forgey videoed the search. Forgey says no. "If we could have predicted where we are today, it would have been videotaped." Baez: You had a situation where you knew there was no body in that car. Forgey: It was just a vehicle in question.

Baez is asking repeatedly why the search of the car was not video taped. Forgey said it's not standard nor required to do so.Baez is asking who is present when Forgey is training his partner. Baez: The dog gets your praise as a reward. Forgey: Yes. Baez: The dog wants to make you happy. (paraphrasing).  CA def fails to impeach K9 abilities with missing "alerts" because officer explForgey's dog was called out to the site on Suburban Drive to search for a few missing bones.ains why the dog was being kept from main site.

Jose is done with cross. Redirect by LDB.LDB asks if Forgey knows his work will be scrutinized by public, supervisor, court, etc. He agrees. LDB asks if Forgey knows his work will be scrutinized by public, supervisor, court, etc. He agrees.  LDB asks if Forgey knows his work will be scrutinized by public, supervisor, court, etc. He agrees. Forgey and his dog have worked over 3k calls. 200 cadaver calls. Very few are video taped, he says. Forgey: If the helicopter was there, it was taped (in real world call outs.)LDB: Wiill your dog alert to trash? Forgey: No. LDB asks why Forgey was concerned about trash in forensic bay, was he talking about someone's lunch or something else? Forgey: biohazards. Baez back up for re cross. Baez: You don't know if Caylee's dead body was in the back Forgey: Clear as day i smelled it (human decomposition.)yard or this is a false alert.  Baez is asking if Forgey's testimony is based on speculation. Forgey: Clear as day i smelled it (human decomposition.). Forgey said he worked patrol before the K9 unit and smelled many decomposing bodies. The deputy is excused. JP calls for a 5 minute stretch break. Allows the jury to leave the room.

They will get to eat Italian and steak. "i think ya'll know what Im talking about,' Perry says.
