Dr. Stephan Hanson,Dist. 9 Chief Medical Examiner

Stephen Hanson is now on stand. He is from the medical Examiners office. His hands are seen picking up skull. Hanson is the chief investigator for the Medical Examiners office. Hanson is reviewing more pictures. CA  is looking up now but looks down when a pic is about to be published.  Hanson is looking at pictures of the wooded area- moving into the path where remains were recovered.  Hanson says Dec 11, 2008 was a cold and rainy day. Hanson announced the results of Caylee's autopsy on her remains.
Lunch.
Hanson removing skull from trash site
Witness Steven Hanson from Dist. 9 ME  He says he didn't do a close exam at scene when first arrived on scene. Hanson describes crime scene as covered in vines, other vegetation. Hanson says of Caylee's skull: "Initially it was very difficult to discern. Hanson circles where duct tape is near/ on skull.
Hanson reviews next picture. It's much more graphic. The duct tape is also easier to see. They had to manipulate the camera and use a camera with a dual screen in order to take . picture and not disturb crime scene. CA continues to look down and cry. Her parents George and Cindy Anthony did not return.Reports>You can start to see the front of the skull (face) jurors are looking at Casey Anthony. The duct tape still doesn't look attached. Long strands of dark hair are still on the top of the skull . Ashton asks about the "hair mat". ME Hanson shows the jury where the hair is left in the skull.

Hanson says they were hoping and thinking there were more remains (bones) inside the bag (black plastic bag. Hanson says as medical Examiners office they control the remains while Sheriff's office controls crime scene. Hanson uses his own head (he is pretty much bald) to show jury what exactly they are looking at. CA wipes tears, keeps her head down, eyes gazing downward during slide show of Caylee's skull. Hanson tried to keep the skull and duct tape in the same position.Hanson says he went about 6-8 inches to the side and went down as far as he could and scooped it up to a brown paper bag.  They placed the skull in a brown bad. They placed the black bag and cloth bag in a separate. They recovered some long bones in a different area.
REPORT> Pic now shows the front of the skull. I can see the eye sockets. No jury reACTION
Hanson collected cloth. It is now know that they were parts of shorts and a blanket. Hanson says his last trip to crime scene was Dec 17, 2008 he went to gather things he thought were remains.
Cheney Mason steps up for cross examination. Cheney asks him if he knew who removed the log. Hanson states> I did. after I took pic of skull. Hanson: Moved log and found more remains.  Mason points out a picture where it looks like someone cut a path through some underbrush.Mason asks Hanson if he knows number of people who tracked through the wooded area. In this photo it looks as if a machete is stuck in the ground.  Hanson the skull was embedded in vegetation. Hanson does not have first time knowledge i skull had been moved.Mason asks if Hanson knows if someone moved skull. Ashton objects and moves to strike.  Ashton stood up and objected loudly asking for a sidebar. He even started heading in that direction. Judge said no. ( There are reports someone who found the skull may have kicked it)  The question is stricken.Mason asks when Hanson "scooped" everything up if duct tape could have changed positions. Hanson says "it could have"
Hanson went out to site several days as evidence had been found. He was involved in transportation not analysis. He was not involved in putting the skeleton together.
Excused. ( Hanson and Mason have a History. they have worked in this environment before.)
